The Evening Star. PUBLISHE DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1884.
As we predicted a short time Bince troublous times are in store for the possessors of the Treasury Benches during the coming session. Signs of weakness hare been displaying themselves for some time past, and the last " knock down blow" administered to the reigning powers is the refusal of a constituency, which has of late years been a strongly supporting Government district, to accept the candidate farored by Govern., ment, and its displayed determination to be represented by an avowed Oppositionist. This is only a sign of an apparent revulsion of feeling, which may be with or without any solid foundation, but there are many wares to buffet in the uea of troubles with which w« can plainly see the present Ministry will have to contend. The method adopted of dealing with the native difficulty, which is causing much annoyance and expense to the country, will hardly be a cause of self-gratulation; the deficiency in Customs revenue will have to be provided for, and additional provision made for intercut, sinking food, and
payment in connection with our increa&ed indebtedness, lessening receipts, and not diminishing expenditure. Tli9 Treasurer will doubtless propose further taxation; he has ever been ready with this when placed in any dilemma while in office ; ; and if [some fresh object suitable for his despoiling in fluence in the way of imposing fresh taxation does not crop up, no doubt something more will be added to the Property Tax. With the many reforms calling for immediate attention,— such things as relate to the' Licensing Law, Education Act, Local Government, and a host of other all-engrossing subjects which allow of no delay in dealing with, —we predicate a time which will require tact of no mean order to deal with.
