NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL. " The winze oh No. 2 re£f below No. 5 j level is now down 86f£r «*s,«' brguikiag down to-day tbe ma a^er,<cear#d from tbe hangingwall portion of the reef a - number of stones showing cokrs* gold, gome of them rich enough to cUs* «• specimens., The, resf is coming togethe*, and will apparently soon be a solid body . of quartz. - ' , .",.'": - " DEEP LEVEL,GR<m The pump is working smoothly, and it, rapidly reducing the water; this morning ' there was only six. fcjt in depth on the 640 ft flatsheet, and tfie leralabpnld be nearly dry by to-morrow 'afternoon. Work will not however be commenced till Monday. i^t" QUEEN OF .BElWir.
Since Mr Morrison.took charge of this mine he bas turn d bis attention chief!/ to a be ly of quartz on the shaft side of the reef worked by Mr Wilson as the main reef. This lode was first passed through in the shaft between No:*. 8 and 9 leve's, and below tiu former is entirely . untouched seaward. Ho then picked it up in the wall of the old stopes at No. 9,. and after driving a "short distance he commenced sinking, and found a little gold, while the appearance of the mineral and the quartz induced him to believe .that this body of quartz was really the main lode, this opinion being strengthened bj the fact that it keeps the proper underlie, while the other lode dips in the opposite direction. Thi3 wiuze is still in progress, aud the lode looks well. A crosscut was - put in at No. 10 lerel, near the slide, and .., touched a body of gritty quarts, which was driven on, but which bassioei proved not to be ihe reef. The manager yesterday fcund the formation of a lode on the right hand side of the drive, and on following this for a few feet, it has opened out into a strong, solid body of quartz quite nine inches wide, and which is apparently opening out. This lode is ' undoubtedly identical with the one being sunk on, and though co gold has yet been seen, the minerals are similar to those
found at No. 9 near the big p..tch. The manager will lose no time in opening up and tr«tinqj this new lede as scon as he can get air, and is sanguine of finding gold. The crosscut at No. 8 level towards the Vanguard ia making excellent head" ' ' way ia good country. - - ■ NEW MANUKAU. -•'■-- A discovery.which may prove of great. important wa3 ye^erdry made by the manager. In stoping above the. Golden,-,, Crown lOOit. level on the leader in hand,. a small portion of quartz was broken from "'' the han<?ipgwall of the No. 2,rcef, f gainst \' which the le der" 4 abuts, and gold war freely seen in the 'stone, which also contained luby silver and .favourable minerals? Some' more of the quartz wri broken to-dey, and gold was still freely sraa^ tain* a- compacted, by-th*" - * same piomisin? indications. On account ' " or there doL being room at present t) break through the r J, Mr Dunlop will rot do any nio<-e oa it till the next stopeit btou^hfc along, which will bd in about «•- week's time. The No. 2 ltle is 1 usually of considerable, s!ze, aad as there is a large unlouchcd block on it at this point in the Manuka a ground, tbe discovery of payable gold would be of importance. GOLD RETURNS. .. Magnolia.—A ti.".tl pare J from the Gibraltar reef at* this' company's low level tunnel has yielded Sqzs lOdwts gold.
