Arrived: Orient steamship Garonne, with mails, via Suez and Brindisi, dated London, December 12, consisting of 195 bags. The New Zealand portion of the mails has been forwarded, via Sydney, to Auckland.

Sydney, Yesterday.

Sailed, this afternoon: The P.M.S/ Australia, for San Francisco, via Auckland.

Further arrests have been made by the police in connection with the murder of Elizabeth Phillips, at Woolloomooloo, on September 10, last year. Arrived, last night, in Sing George's Sound: The P. and O. steamer Bosetta, with the inward mails via Suez and Brin» disi, dated London, Dec. 28.

Melboctene, Yesterday, vi Australian. Separation. A meeting of residents of Eiverina (a district lying between the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers, now forming a part of New South Wales) will be held here to-morrow, for the purpose of considering the question of separation from New South Wales ; which has been advocated at meetings held in other places. Arrived, this morning: The Union steamer Te Anau, from the Bluff.

At the Geelong Earing Club's meeting to-day, the race for the Gold Cup was won by Linda. Scott (Victoria) and Garrett (N.S.W.) have joined the Australian oricket team of twelve or thirteen players who proceed to England.
