This day
The Presbyterian synod last night carried by a large majority the overture of the Dunedin Presbytery to memorialise parliament to amend the Education Act so as to allow of daily Bible reading during school hours. Mr Lothinan's amendment for the appointment of a committee to co»operate with any other branches of the reformed Church in order to ascertain whether it would be possible for the churches, by united action, to organise a staff of trained, efficient and paid Bible instructors who shall devote themselves to giving Bible instruction periodically in stated hours in the public schools found no seconder.
Arrived: Steamship Bombay, from London ; all well. H.M.S. Espeigle had a drill at quarters to-day for the benefit of the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Navals, who attended in full strength. She leaves for Lyttelton to morrow.
Newton, who received twenty-five lashes in gaol to-day, suffered severely.
