There is not the least doubt that the " wind has been taken out of the sails," of the Thames people by those interested in the Waiorongomai field, in inaugurating a prospecting company to test the resourcesof the TeAroha, side of the moun tain of gold. It cannot be donbted that a want of prospecting has allowed this field to droop a little, and that in addition to the efforts to work the deep lerels of the ascertained gold producers, which are being made, something should be attempted in the direction of doing justice to the district by prospect ing. The source of our supply" of gold has been traced and followed in a very limited way, but little enterprise has been shown ia opening up fresh fields for working in. The hills surrounding the immediate goldfield present large Opportunities for prospecting, and we eaaofit but feel convinced that great developments jp.ould result from judicious work done by eKpeyjenped prospectors. It is not to be expected tu&t .there are Amongst us qualified miners who could j undertake the arduous and expensive task ojfexhausticely prospecting thesurrounding country without receiving some assistance in their work, and we cannot .see a more profitable outlay from a general point of view—even if the prospecting party did not meet sr jth the success we are sure they would encounter—than a few pounds spent in " trying " our«urrounding ground. Hating all this in view, we would advocate the formation of a prospecting company which could not but meet with every encouragement and support. It is not
only the immediate results of its work which should be looked to, but the certainty, almost, of those results proving the firmness, and acting as the salvation j of, the place.
