The irrepressible Mrs French has brought herself within police control again. This time the divine Jane has been the victim of good nature. She has not been gratifying her almost insatiable thirst, but foolishly pandering to the cravings of a prohibited person. The Bench will shortly be called upon to ask Jane to answer a charge of obtaining liquor for a recently prohibited individual.

The steamer Triumph, beached in Mechanics' Bay, Auckland, has now assumed an almost upright position. A large quantity of coal was discharged from her yesterday, bub a quantity of other cargo yet remains. It is intended to run the vessel further aground at high water, in order to secure a greater rise and fall in the tide than at present, which will permit of removal of cargo, and also afford greater facilities for repairing the vessel.

At a meeting of the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held yesterday, the quarterly report stated that there had been nine prosecutions, of which six produced convictions, while two of the other three were withdrawn, and one dismissed.

The barque Mataura, from London was successfully brought up the Harbour Board's Victoria Channel to Dunedin last evening. She was drawing 17 feet 2 inches of water. A large crowd assembled on the wharf, and her arrival created much enthusiasm. This is the first Home vessel which has been brought to Dunedin.

The Auckland Star says:—There is reason to believe that a good deal of " baby-farming " ia carried on in different parts of the colony, and it may be remembered that last year there was a report that an establishment of the kind was in existence in the suburban borough of Parnell. Whatever may be the case here, certain suspicious facts lead to the conclusion that the worst practices of the " baby*farmers " are not unknown in Dunedin.
