Thisday.

Of 143 quail, landed from the mail steamer, 125 go to Wanganui and Nelson.

The Pukekohe Cheese Factory was successfully started yesterday. The vats heated nicely, and everything is working satisfactorily.

Advices have been received that the New Zealand Shipping Company's direct steamer Euapehu left Plymouth for Auckland on January 12.

McLeod's house, which was destroyed by fire this morning, was some time ago purchased for £300 from J. B. Russell. The occupants narrowly escaped with their lives. Practically nothing was saved.

The Waikato cricket team arrived in* town yesterday, and commenced a series of matches today.

A serious obstacle has occurred in the way of the Emily Place works, which are delaying the erection of the Frozen Meat Company's store. The Diocesan Trust now declines to allow anything to be done unless they get better terms than were agreed to by the City Council, Harbour Board, and Freezing Company with the vestry of St. Paul's, and in which it was understood that the Diocesan Trust had acquiesced. Tenders had been cailed to do the work of cutting down Emily Place, on the understanding that everything had been settled, but when the directors of the Freezing Company met yesterday to open tenders, they found it would not be safe to do so, in consequence of the intervention of the Diocesan Trust.
