LATE ENGLISH NEWS.

(Age Specials.)

(Peb Pbess Association.)

Lomdon, January 1. > At tbe New Year's Day reception held by tbe Emperor of Germany at Berlin, he predicted that 1884 wonld be a year of peace amongst the European Powers. Tbe terms of the triple agreement which has been entered into between Germany, Austria, and Italy are published this morning. They stipulate an unreserved alliance between Italy and Austria, but; they exonerate Italy from assisting Germany should that country be engaged in war with France. The French Ministry have decided upon selling the GoTermnent lines of railway to private companies, and negotiations with this object have already been entered into. , A proposal has been made for the reduction of the'salaries now paid to Egypv tian officials. In reference to the formal demand made on Great Britain by the Egyptian Government for.aid in quelling El Mahdi s rebellion in the Soudan, it is rumoured thatthe British Cabinet, will grant the assistance asked for, and it is also considered probable that in such case the Great' Powers will require England to guarantee the safety of foreigners in Egypt. It is estimated there are 15,000 Egyptian troops available for defence. This force Sir Evelyn Baring considers to be insufficient. The treaty which has been arranged between Germany, Austria, and Italy, for mutual protection and assistance in time of war, is condemed by the French Press, and the French Government is, it is said, preparing a protest on the subject. The London Press is almost unanimously opposed to France interfering in any way with Egyptian affairs at the present time. It is rumoured that Earl Dufferin is again to return to Egypt. Professor Owen, C.8., an anatomist, has been knighted. The death is announced of Herr Lasker, a prominent member of the German Par* liament, at the age of 54.
