GENERAL SUMMARY.

The London police hare begun a raid upon; fashionable gambling-houses. On the 15th December they entered the Baccarefc Club, Jenks' Club, the Park Club, and others—known as swell hells— and arrested the players and proprietors. The failures are announced of Peyton and- Peyton, furniture manufacturers, Birmingham, for £100,000, and of Abbo£, Page, and Co., London stockbrokers, for £165,000, ; \

The libel suit brought by the London News Agency against the comic paper Judy has been dismissed by the Judge on the ground that the alleged libel was a fair criticism on the way in which the Agency conducted its business, and if the suit succeeded the freedom of the Press might be seriously injured. The executrix of the Dowager Lady Lytton threatens to publish 300 letters of the late Lord unless his son will do justice to the memory of his mother. The refusal of Mr Goschen to accept the Speakership of the House of Commons is the result of his aspiration to succeed the Marquis of Ripon as the Viceroy of India.

14,000 cotton operators are idle in Lancashire. Half the Blackburn looms are stopped, and the men on strike. The A nglo-Egyptian Bank at Alexandria has offeied the Egyptian Government ten millions sterling to construct a canal parallel to the present Suez Cabal.
