The funeral of Fireman H. Sullivan will take place to-morrow at two o'olock, ■when members of both brigades, and those belonging to the H.A.0.8. Society, are requested to attend. We are requested to prevent unnecessary alarm .being caused by stating that the fire-bell will be tolled at the time of the funeral.
The Police Court was not opened to-day. The people are maintaining their reputation of being law-abiding.
The Thames Bifle Bangers fired to day in. two squads, the first of three competitions, for prizes presented by Messrs Benshaw, W. D. Beid, and McGregor. The ranges were 200, 300, and 500 yards, seven Bhots at each. There were eight competitors in the morning squad, the following being the four^hjghcßt [scorers :—Vol. J. Inglis, 71,; Vol. A. Sherlock, 65 ; Lieut. Lucas, 63 j Vol. Gentry, 55.

A SON of Mr W. J. McKee, of Shortland, was addmitted to the Hospital late yeaterday afternoon suffering from a severe cut on the so'e of his foot through treading on a glass bottle. The little fellows wound was dressed and he was taken to his home.
A SOCIAL meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board was held to make the appointment of a Deputy Harbour Master in the place of Capfc. John McEenzie, resigned. The committee to [which applications were referred rocommended the names of Captains Fisher* Bayldon (Thames), and Cooper for consideration. A ballot was taken, and five votes were recorded fox Captain Fisher, four for Captain Bayldon, and three for Captain Cooper; the two forxuer wero then balloted for, and, the voting being equal, six being recorded for each, the Chairman gave his casting vote in favour of Captain Fisher.
NoTHIKe has yet been decided as to the fate of the girl Boyle acquitted in Wellington on a charge of the manslaughter of her infant. The question of her disposal will be duly considered by Government on a report beipg received from the learned Judge who tried the case, but bo far no report has been received from his Honor.
The Auckland Supreme Court Criminal Sittings concluded yesterday evening at 7 o'clock. Joseph Pritchard, for indecently assaulting bis niece of tender yeare, was sentenced to four years' penal servitude.—John Wheeler, for sheep stealing, to two years' imprisonment with hard labour.
The Tribune says :—" Mr John Quinlan, of Waitawiieta, met with a serious accident on Monday lust while mustering cattle in the Waitawheta bush. In rout ding up a steer, he was thrown from bis horse and one oi bis ankles broken. It will be Borne time before he can be about again."

An Oddfellows' Demonstration ft to take place on iho evening of the 29th instant (Anniversary Day). AN amusing example of esprit de eorjps was given at New Plymouth on Tuesday last while a number of volunteer recruits were engaged trying on their new uniforms. . An old cavalry officer of the late Mounted Rifles was present, when he taw a late member of the Mouuted R fles step forward and doii the new infantry uniform. With ah exclamation of surprise, the former said s "What! You have left tho cavalry and joined the beetle-crushers. What bad taste." It need hardly bo said that the officers of the infantry corps who were present felt their dignity touched, and a challenge to bot coffee and pistols was Hkoly to have eventuated, but the.cavalry officer hastened to explain that for the moment he bad been carri d away by the old feelings of jealousy cborished between the infantry and caralry regiuienla oHhe Une.

Last week a test was made of some Canterbury diamonds in comparison with others, the genuineness of which bad been ascertained. Mr T. B. Craig placed some of the Canterbury stones in an ordinary copying press, and on screwing the level down the atones were reduced by the pressure to powder. This was repeated four or fire timer with the same result. On! placing the genuine diamonds in the press* however, the utmost efforts to break them, nay, more, so bard were the stones that they actually indented the iron surface top and bottom.
Mb Forbes Gohdon, of ELihikihi, has grown this year about half a ton of gooseberries, 7001bs of which be sent to the Auckland market, and for which he got a return of from sii to 7d per lb. Some of tke variety known as the ••' Farmer's Glory," grown by him, measured 3£~ and 3J inchea in circumference.
