Six young ladies took the " black veil " on Saturday at the Convent, atPonsonby. Bishop Luck officiated, assisted by three priests.
Mr Rochfort and a survey party arrived at Kihikihi on Saturday, having completed an exploration of the Central Railway route to the westward of, Tuhua, He reports a good line throughout, and that he was kindly received by the natives everywhere. The natives state that Carkeek s party is on the Ohura River, and is meeting with very unfavorable country for railway purposes. The whole o£ ihe King Country has been traversed, and found to consist; in a large proportion, of first class land.
At the E. M. Court to-day, Edwards the pedestrian was sue 4 for £50 by J. H. Pollock, butcher, of Wellington, alleged to have been lost by the plaintiff acting as a .guarantor for Edwards when the latter had an hotel in Wanganui. Edwards repudiated the debt, and said a blank cheque produced, with his signature, was a forgery. Hjs Worship nonsuited the plaintiff with costs £3 13s, Remarking that the whole thing was unsatisfactory. An application has been made to the Court; to iiapojind £he cheque pending further proceedings. Criminal Sessions. Judge Gillies, in opening the Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Cpurt this morning, said the calendar was aa extremely light one, there being only thirteen cages, in which thirteen persons are chafgejL The offences were also light, being ordinary larcenies, fojir natives charged with sheep stealing, one ease of housebreaking, ope of forgery, and one of shooftng a'jb a steer. John ,Cagk, an old mac, was found guilty of stealing articles of clothing, an/1 was seat to prison for ]two years.
