Consols remain at IC9J. The market rate of discount has declined to 2|, and is now |- below the Bank rate. New Zealand securities 5 per cent 10-49 loan, 104§; 5 per cent 1888 loan, 103§; 4| per cent 1878-1904 loan, 101£; 4 per cent inscribed stock, ICO. Colonial breadstuffs :—Adelaide wheat ex store, 465; New Zealand do., 38s 6d to 43s 6d; Adelaide flour, ex store, 325. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,870,000 quarters, being a decrease of 500,080qrs during the week. Australian tallow, best beef, 39s lOd; best mutton, 445. London, January 4. News has been .received that the British-India Steam Navigation Co.'s steamship Duke of. Westminster, 2427 tons, from Brisbane (Nov. 6) ran ashore at the Isle of Wight, and is in a very critical position ; all the passengers have been landed in safety. Tugs have gone to the vessel. An assistance note has been addressed by the Egyptian Government to the British Foreign Minister, in which a demand is made for England's assistance in the Soudan. The note states that unless this be accorded the Egyptian Government will be compelled to relinquish to Turkey the eastern, portion of the Soudan, and concentrate its troops in Egypt proper, and thus be able to dispense with the British army of occupation. |
