The seamen at Port Chalmers have complained that Justices, connected with thefshipping interest, 'have always dealt with, charges against seamen at Port Chalmers, Mr Pyke, M.ET.R., entered into correspondence with the Minister of Justice, who has replied that in future the R.M. alone will hear such charges.
This day. The weather yesterday was exceedingly disagreeable, heavy showers of rain oc - casionally falling. The attendance at the Caledonian sports was about 80C0. Donald Dinnie out distanced all competitors in throwing the hammer and putting the 161b stone,'but was beaten in the dancing. Woods won the Caledonian Handicap of 220 and 350 yards, with Noel second ; and Burke, starting from the scratch, won the Mile Handicap in 4mins. 50secs. About 800 excursionists visited Oamaru by the Hauroto. The theatres at night were packed.
