The former cut Lankbam's first to Blair at coverpoint for a single, and Milton had then to
retire, Lankham's second being taken at wickefc by Dewes off a snick—l—l—o. Buchanan came next, and Dudney hit Barton to leg^ for a couple and drove Lankham grandly to long-on for 3, and then cut his first in the next over hard for 3, but the second he put up over Robinson's head at midon, who by a splendid effort just held it-^-13 —2 —ll. Secretan joined Buchanan, and Harman went out to run for him, the incoming batsman opening his record with a cut for a brace off Barton, and a late cut for 3 off Lankham. Buchanan responded with an on«drive for a like number off the same triindler, which made 30 appear on the telegraph. A cut by Secretan for 3 off Barton, and a leg stcpke off Lankham to leg for a couple, and the bowler scattered his wickets with the next ball— 28-3-11. Ashby filled the vacant crease and saw Buchanan hit Barton twice for three. GUV now came on in Barton's place. Ashby cut Lankham prettily to cover, and 2 were registered ; soon after driving him to off for a triplet, and then got Gill to leg for a like number. This brought Blair on instead of Gill, and Buchanan was caught by Dewes at the wickets off Lankham, after compiling 16 in a very free manner—sl-4-16. The. visitors' captain (Wilding) joined Ashby, and 1 saw him drive Blair to long-off for a quartette. Ashby then drove him to on for 3. A 4 to Wilding proved rather an expensive over. This brought Auckland's captain on instead of Blair, and Robinson stole into Wilding's wicket with a shooter —68-5-3. Edser came and went, being clean bowled by Lankham's fourthj t ball —71-6-0. When the stumps were drawn six wickets were down for 80 runs.

Harman next went in, but, at the over, lost his partner, Ashby beingcaught, by Dewes behind the wicket, after piaying a good innings of 39. Malet then went in with the score at 121, and was also caught by Dewes. The two last men shared the same fate, being prettily caught by Dewes, who hacLcaught no less than six men behind the wickets. The second innings brings Canterbury's total up to 291, leaving Auckland 151 to get to win. Later—l.4o p.m. Auckland commenced the second innings at 12,10, Yates and Testro batting to the bowling of Pocock and Chapman, with the score at 9, Testro, after making 4, was caught in the slips by Secretan off Pocock.
