Mr W. S. Gilbert has just built for himself a dwelling»house in Harringtongardens, South Kensington, which will be worthy to rank amongst the show-places of London. It is said that the author of "lolanthe " has expended £30,0C0 on the house alone, before an article of furniture is pat into it. While the average American of wealth makes a specialty of racing or trotting horse* 1, the English moneyed man directs his attention to salt water and yschts. The yachting hobby has especialy grown very popular in Great Brilian of late years. Twenty years ago there were only thirty British steam yachts in existence. To-day they number four hundred and seventy, one third of which average four hundred tons burden. The aggregate value of this sporting navy is over £2,200,000.
