The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1883.
Oun perturbed spirit will not and cannot rest until some steps are taken to rescue the district from the dangers threatening it through the want of spirit apparently existing in the people; and were our dis - solution to immediately occur, our spiritual representative would haunt the place if it thought, as we do, that a great deal is to be done by the inhabitants in the direc tion of self help. It has always been our care and study to promote anything tending to adrance the interests of the place, and we have from time_to time advocated the introduction of various named industries in our midst. We are gratified to learn that one of our suggestions has taken root, and we hope it will fructify. With no little satisfaction we have learnt that the, industry of leather making, and its attendant, a boot factory is likely to be taken up with spirit by some capitalists on the Thames. As we have previously pointed out, the raw material is on the spot, and the labor can be easily obtained ; therefore it only requires a small capital to inaugurate an industry which will give employment to a large proportion of our population, increase the circulation of that very necessary medium we are looking for, and remove to a certain extent the feeling of depression which appears* to be overcoming the district. This manufacture is only one'of many which might be profitably conducted on the Thames, and it would seem somewhat inexplicable that not one of them is pushed by those whose interests are here, saying nothing of the neglect of a remunerative source for outside capital. We must deprecate the habit some people have of decrying the place wherein their fortunes are cast, and where any prosperous times they have experienced have been spent; but still we must admit that " bald facts stare hard," and the only remedy in such cases is to remove the existence of those bald facts. If only as an initial performance we will heartily welcome the establishment of the Leather and Boot Factory, and if it meet with the success we wish it, its prosperity will be unlimited.
