OUR MINES
NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL.
A breaking down of the No. 2 reef in the stopes above No. 5 level west of the winze took place early this morning, the splendid haul of 5 cwt of good specimens being bagged. Of these about 2cwt came from the reef 25ft. west of the break, being no doubt the continuation of the run which was followed right up from the level. The remaining 3cwt were ob* tamed close to the break on the eastern side, and here a good show of gold was left in the roof for a length ot two or three feet. The succeeding stopes here should yield well, as it will be remembered a rich show of gold was left in the floor of No. 4 level. The eastern drive at No. 5 level is looking well, and the dirt from here shapes for a good return. Owing to the general meeting taking place shortly, the manager will have a cleaning up and retorting for the fortnight to»morrow morning. The remainder of the specimens to hand, lOcwt. in all, was treated to-day, and the whole parcel has shaped for the usual good average. The return will be a good one, and it is expected that a substantial Christmas-box, in the shape of a dividend, will be given to the shareholders.
QUEEN OF ENGLAND.
After touching the No. 1 reef in the crosscut afc No. 4 level the contractors refused to drive through it without extra pay, and work has in consequence been at a standstill since pending instructions from the directors, which the manager daily expects to receive.
MARINER
The winze on the crossleader, below No. 4 level, is now down 30ft, and in breaking down yesterday a considerable improvement was noticeable in the leader, five pounds of specimens being secured. The quartz is about three inches in width.
BRIGHT SMILE.
Crushing was started this morning at the Queen of Beauty battery with five head of stamps, the battery running 16 hours per day. There will probably be about 40 loads of dirt to be treated. Mr Senior is in charge of the mine, though he has not yefc received any official appointment as manager. The crosscut at the low level for the foofcwall leader has not yet been started, as no surrey has been made.
CALEDONIAN.
A leader was cut in the crosscut at No. 2 level lastnight; it is 8 inches wide, and from its course will keep in the drive for some 30 feet or more. The quartz is of a promising description, with good minerals, but no gold has been seen jet. It is lying in favorable country. The stopes on the Red Queen leader above No. 5 level are looking about the same, and the crushing continues to shape for a good payable return,
