Baker Pasha is now engaged organising an expedition against the Soudan rebels. His force will bo composed of Egyptian gendarmes, negro troops, and a contingent of Bedouin Arabs.

A meeting of persons interested in the late International Fisheries Exhibition was held at the Cannon street Hotel last night, when much dissatisfaction was expressed at the awards of the juries, and it was resolved that a deputation should wait upon the Government to protest against the same.

New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—5 per cent. 10-4.3 loan, 104J; 5 percent. 1889 loan, 103|; 4| per cent. 1879-1904 loan, lOlf; 4 per cent. h« scribed stock, 100§. The market rate discount has further advanced i, and is now 2f. Bank rate, 3 per cent. No changes to report in markets for colonial produce.

The Australian mails per the Orient steamship John Elder, dated November 3, were delivered via Naples yesterday.
The steamship Kent, outward bound from Loudon to Melbourne, was found on arrival at Port Said to be on fire in. th«
hold. The fire was extinguished soon after it was discovered. Some slight damage has been done to the cargo.

A destructive hurricane of unprecedented violence passed over England today. Several persons were killed, and others seriously injured. Alargeamonnt of property was destroyed along the path of the storm.
The election to fill a vacancy in the representation to Ipswich in the House of Commons, resulted to-day in the return of Mr West; his opponent, Mr Charley, being defeated by a large majority. -
Caiko, December 12
Latest * despatches to hand from the Soudan states that the Egyptian garrisons at Duem and Shat (sic) are being massed at Khartoum in view of an attack which is expected to be made upon the town by Arab rebels. It also stated that El Mahdi is sending a force of 10,0C0 men into the Darfour district.
