Whether the town was to be bombarded by a visiting sloop of war, or whether the importance of our being 1, was recognised by the Union Co. in sending down the Tarawera or some other vessel, seemed to ibe a moot point with the observers of a stramer coming up the Harbour this week. Some disappointment was experi> ended when, with all expectancy at boiling point, and every»nerve strained to guess the cause of an important marine visitor, it was discovered that the Secretary of Customs was visiting the Thames in state, in the Government steamer Stella. The inspection of H.M..Customs returns should m future be accompanied by a man-of-war. It would seem though that a seven : and sixpenny passage by the Ro'omahana might have served the same purpose, saved the colony a few pounds, with only the drawback of lessening the dignity of the official who visited us. Notwithstanding the " gush " and the general " lathering" of local men and bodies, by the Chairman in proposing the toast of the evening at the late Te Arbha banquet, most of it was well deserved, and the eulogiums passed on the local Whitakerwere well earned.
