A portion of the cargo of frozen mat ton ex Fenstanton, from Lyttelton, was placed on the market, and realised 6d per pound. The Woodlark, one of the gun vessels on the East Indian station, has been ordered to Soukin, on the coast of the Eed Sea, fears being entertained that another attack may be made on the Egyptian garrison stationed there.

It has transpired the Ohinece Groyernment continues to adopt a firm and unyielding attitude in the negotiations which are now pending for the settlement of the Tonquin difficulty, and refuses either to withdraw or to modify its claims, on Tonquid, and is prepared to appeal to arms rather than surrender to France the military ports in Tonquin now occupied by Chinese troops.

Despatches to hand from the Soudan state that the panic which arose at Khartoum in consequence of the expectation that El Mahdi would advance and besiege the town after having annihilated the Egyptian army under Hicks Pasha, has now subsided, the rebels having shown no intention of taking advantage of the weakness of the garrison, to make an attack.
