The b.s. Despatch left Te Aroha this morning about half-past five o'clock, having on board a number of returning visitors to Te Aroha. .She was detained in the river for an hour, aid reached the Goods Wharf shortly after 12 o'clock. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand was a passenger, and brought down 37000z3 of gold, the produce of the Waiorongomai crushing.
Tee members of the Auckland Band of Hope Union Choir, numbering over 70 perbocß) together with a considerable number of their friends, arrived here at about noon today by the Botomahana. Unfortunately the state of the weather rendered the trip anything but pleasurable, and the same cause necessitated a lapsing of the proposed cricket match this afternoon on the WaicKaraka Flat. The arrangements made by their Thames friends for their reception were complete in every respect, and severaLprominent members of the temperance organisations here have' been indefatigable in their exertions to render the trip aa enjoyable as possible. It] is hardly necessary probably to remind our readers that the performance, for which they are visiting the Thameß, comes off at the Academy of Music to-night, and we hope residents here will not allow the rain to militate in any way against the success which would undoubtedly have attended their efforts Bhould the weather have been more propitious.
The funeral of the chief over whose body the tangi has .recently been held at Kirikiri took place on Wednesday, and the natives, to show their respect to deceased, dragged the cart containing the corpse by hand to Totera Point, a° distance of quite « mile and a half. ,
Two rival jehus aoppeared in the E.M.s Court this morning. From the evidence for the plaintiff (George Vidal), it appeared that he had gone on a cab stand at the end of the Goods Wharf, and had taken up a position behind some other cabs which were facing down the wharf; the defendant (Miller) occupied a position on a cross-road facing Tararu, and when Vidal was following the preceding cabs down the wharf Miller drove into his cab, and did damage to it amounting to 7b. The defendant's version of the affair .was that the plaintiff had attempted to "jump his claim" on the stand, and in doiDg so cauaed the damage alleged to have been done by defendant* The Bench dismissed the eaee.
LABT evening, about six o'clock, Phillips' coaoli was seen coming down Mary street at a rapid pace, and on rounding the corner coming into Pollen street the driver was uncerc moniously tumbled out—the horses belting with the coach up Pollen street towards Shortland, The driver, McGfuire, had a narrow escape, as it was, his foot, just over the ankle was severely bruised and cu<\ Dr floatable "clressed the viound.
A MAN, named Thomas Thompson, who was arrested at Te Aroha for larceny and em* bezzlement committed in Taranaki in 1881, was brought down from Te Aroha to-day in charge of the Polioe, He has been remanded to New Plymouth.
Tee Brokers did not issue a share list to-day. At a meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association it was agreed that £50 be guaranteed to the Canterbury Association on condition that the Interprovincial match is played on the 28th, 29th, and 31st December, so as to be prior to the matches with the Wanderers.
On Wednesday night last Joseph Fantham, a farmer in the Sand Hills district, was accidentally drowned in the Waimakariri, Canterbury, when driving home from Addington sale yards. He leaves a wife and family.
The Christchurch unemployed, to the number of 102, signed a petition yesterday morning to the Mayor, asking him to request the Minister of Public Works to put them again on work at 6s a day, 88 at Dunedin. They had been recently discharged from the Addington workshops.
Nomination day for the Cromwell Mayoralty passed over without; a single candidate. Tbe local paper may well confess that " Municipal affairs at Cromwell are at a low ebb."
