AUCKLAND.
This day. There was a prolonged meeting of the City Council last night; the principal debate was on the report of the Finance Committee, recommending that an offer of £13,000 be made for an estate of about 110 acres, lately owned by Mr Edgecumbe, adjoining the Western Springs. The main object of the purchase was to keep the springs pure. A case recently postponed at the E.M. Court was heard yesterday. A Mr Linabury sued Miss Haines for the price of dress material and making up. The defence was that the dress was a misfit, and a young lady had to play the part of a " lay figure," while professional experts explained to counsel, in open court/what a properly made dress should be. The plaintiff was nonsuited. Over a dozen houses are in course of erection at the North Shore.
