ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW,
This was continued in the Academy of Music last night. The doors were opened at 7 o'clock, and very soon the floor of the spacious hall was packed with visitors, while numbers also repaired to the gallery, which was liberally patronised all the evening. The Naval Artillery Band was in attendance, and played several selec tions.T At; about 8 o'clock, Dr Kilgour look the chain on the stage, and the
ANNUAL MEETING [ was held. The Chairman congratulated the Society on the success of the Show, which he considered to be quite as pood as in previous years. He was sorry to say that the Society was not in a very flourishing financial condition, but thought they had done very well considering the bad times. He then called upon The liev. C. E. Barley to read the fourteenth annual report and balance sheet, which was adopted on the motion of Mr Kirkpatrick, seconded by Mr McGowan. The report showed that the amount expended in relief was slightly in excess of last year, though the number of persons or families assisted had been the same. The total amount distributed was £113 16s, in 558 weekly reliefs, varying from 2s to ss, piven in orders on trades* men for provisions, to 20 families, two aged widows without families, and one single sick man. Thirteen recipients' names were still on the books. The Committee wished to impress on; this public that Government gave a subsidy of £ for £ on all money raised, and thought that all should join in doing something which would raise enough'money to do away with the necessity of canvassing for subscriptions. The thanks of the Committee were tendered to all,who had supported them in the past, also to Captains Farquhar and Miller, who had at all - times been ready to give free passages to Auckland' for poor people whom the Committee had wanted to send to distant friends. The balance sheet from 18th Nov. 1882 to 21st Nov: 1883 was as follows:—Receipts: To balance in Bank, £37 4s 8d; gross proceeds of Flower Show, Nov. 1882, £52 4s 3d; unexpended relief, £1 14s 6d; Government subsidy, £41 16s 3d ; sale of photos 13s; donations, £2 2$ 6d ; Committee's subscriptions, £6—£142 2s 2d.—Expenditure : By relief, £116; cheque book, 2s Id ; cash book, 4? 6d ; stamp on Government declaration, 2s Gd; gross expenses Flower Show, 1882 r £l6 Os 6d—£l32 9s 7d, leaving a balance in the bank of £9 12s 7d.
Mr A. J. Allom was called upon to speak a few words, and intended to address those present on fruit growing, bat he desisted oq finding that bis voice could not be heard above the tumult.
The usual sale by auctiou of the exhibits not marked as restricted then took place, Messrs Carpenter and McGowan rendering valuable service as vendors'. A number of unclaimed prizes were also disposed of, the total receipts from the sale being £12 Is 3d.^ The amount taken at the doors was £36 10s, and the gross receipts from the Show £48 11s 3d.
