The winze on No. 2 reef from No. 2 level is now down 27ft. The lode has split into two branches, and it is the footwall one which is being sunk on. This is about 18 inches thick, and in breaking down on Thursday night showed | colors and dabs of gold freely, while j another breaking yesterday afternoon produced 101 bs of fair picked stone A further breaking down this morning yielded 301bs specimens and picked stone. The western drive at No. 3 level, on the sacse reef/; is within about 10ft of the point where the winze will come down. The reef was shot down yesterdny, proving to be nearly 18 inches wide, and showing colors of gold. The country here has become whiter, and is also more easily work! 1. .; *** SEYMOUE.
The trial crushing from the reef above the 180 ft level was finished today, the yield not being payable. It is considered ■probable that operations wilJ be suspended, for the present at any rate. NEW COLUMBIA. The manager is at present taking out a trial crushing from the reef above and below the intermediate level. He has 10 loads broken, and a considerable portion of the lode stripped ready for shooting down. The quartz is from 10 inches to two feet wide, and colors of gold have been seen, though not so freely as when sinking the winze- The stuff will be carted to the flat towards the end of next week. OLD GOLDEN CALF. Work was resumed a few days ago in this mine under the supervision of Mr E. McDonald,' and two men are now driving along the bangingwall of the Moanatairi slide. The mullock is brought to the surface through the Moanatairi tunnel. ? OWHAROA. Very little work is going on at present in this district. Two men are working in the Lucky Hit, and one party of tributers is carrying on operations in the. Smile of Fortune. This latter company has greatly reduced the number of hands, only two being engaged. These are now repairing the water 5 race, but will resume work in in the mine very shortly. The No. 1, or Campbell.'s leader was cut in the low level crosscut the day the manager received a notification that his services were dispensed with. Where passed through it would yield about a foot of crushing dirt. The quartz shows a little gold, and prospects well.
