The following telegram was posted at the Corner this morning from tho New Prince Imperial:—" 2cwt specimens and picked stone, 11th stspo, No. 2 section west, No. 6 level.—G. S. Oiabk."
An accident occurred last evening in Hoileston street, by which a boy named Edward Martin, who lives on Block 27, sustained a fracture of the leg below the knee. He was playing with some companions, and fell from the roof of a shed. On the advice of Dr. Payne, ho was taken to the Hospital, where the limb wai set, the boy afterwards being conveyed to his home.
A meeting of the Irish National League will be held this evening in the Hibernian Hall at eight o'clock; the advertisement requests a full attendance of the public.
The brigantine Augusta came down the Thames river this morning in charge of Pilot Bayldon, and anchored off Tararu. She will sail first opportunity for Rookbampton. Several other vessels are lying at anchor in the firth, being wind-bound by the heavy north* westerly weather experienced lately.
A SCBATOH cricket match between the mem* bera of the Thames Cricket Club will be played on the Waio-Karaka Flat to-morrow afternoon, wickets to be pitched at 2 p.m.
The satisfactory information that £1017 was posted for gold duty, was received by the Town Clerk last evening, from the Secretary to the Treasury.
The New Zealand Shipping Company have received a cable that the Fenstanton reached Bio Janeiro on the 9th inst. The refrigerator had worked satisfactorily, and_ the cargo of frozen meat was in good condition.
A PINE sample of copper, over 901bs in weight, from a mine in the Aniseed Valley, Nelson, has been received by the Industrial Association in Christcburch.
Majob Atkinson visited Fort Chalmers yesterday with the Hon. John Martin, M.L 0., J. C. Brown, M.H.R., Mr Boss, Chairman of the Harbour Board, and other gentlemen for the purpose of seeing the stern post forged by Messrs Sparrow and Co., for the Botpmahana. This is a work of great magnitude, and the visitors '■ warmly complimented Mr Sparrow upon its successful completion. An adjournment was made to Dodson's Hotel, where several toasts were drunk. *
Adybbtibino is a good thing (says a Poverty Bay paper), but when » prominent grocer recently carried to a funeral an umbrella on which was painted conspicuously the business of bis house, and held it over the clergyman's head while he read the prayers, the bystanders thought be was running the thing to the ground.
A U&y named A. Crisp was struck by lightning on Wedneiday at Invercargill while standing at a railway station, and died shortly afterwards. Other persona Btanding near were also" affected by the lightning, but were not seriously hurt. Mr Crisp was a laboring man, but very widely known in the district. He had been Councillor of the Borough of South Inveroargill, where he resided, and was N.G. of the District Lodge of Oddfellows. He leaves a widow and a large family of young children. The celebrated athlete, Donald Dinnie, has intimated his intention of competing at the approaching annual sports of the Dunedin Caledonian Bociety. Dinnie's fame is world wide, he having for years held the Championship in many branches of atheltic sports and his, presence willlendnew interest to the games. He is now on a tour through the Uuited States, and wrote from San Francisco to Mr George' Wataon; Secretary to the Dunedin Caledoniah Society, that he would arrive in Mew Zealand by the next mail steamer, reaching Dunedin about December 15th, so that he will be there in plenty time for the sports. Me Watt, R.M., beld;an impromptu Court at Outram, Canterbury, recently, under amusing circumstances. Two men turned oat of an hotel indulged in tome rowdy - behavior. Eventually one ran away, and Mr Watt, who had been standing quietly by rolling a cigarette, stepped up to the other and there and then fined him 20a, or in default three days. The local constable collected the fine., It has just been decided that the fastest passage on record between England and Capetown was achieved by the e.s. Orient, which, on her first voyage, made the run in 17 days 21 hours. Last week heavy floods occurred in the Tauranga distriot, inflating considerable damage on the roads as well as on private;property. A laughable incident occurred at Kali kati, where a number of houses were innndated to the depth of several feet. Mr William Mul* grew, on horseback, attempted to rescue Miss Lockington from the Uretara Hotel, but he having had more whisky than was good for him, over-balanced, and both he and the young lady fell into the seething wat3r6, when she got of temper, and went for her rescuer while in the water, much to the amusement of the spectators.
