Borough Council.
The usual meeting took place last evening. Present—The Mayor, and Crs Bawden r Carpenter, Mennie, McGowan, Osborne, Speight, and Wilson. The following matters were referred to the Works Committee :—Tbe footpath in Map* street between Pollen street and the Beach ; the. deposit of shingle in Pol- ' len street to repair damage done by floods; repairs to the Bird-in-band spur road. The committee reported to the effect that they could -not recommend that M ukay street between Bicbmond and Willdugh by streett be formed, owing to its cost; that a: drain in Willoughb; street be cleaned; that the Foreman of Works see what is required to be done to the enginekeeper's house at the fire brigade station in Shortland ; gravel be spread in Baillie street, from Eichmond to Willoughby streets; that«with regard to the complaint of Allen andiKickit re shifting pegs on tbe Tararu road contract, the amount of compensation—if any—should be settled after the contract is finished; tbat instruc tioni'f bid been given to lay gravel as requested by various ratepayers. The report was adopted.—The Water Supply Committee's report recommended'that a 4-inch main be laid in Willoughby street
to Mackay street* and that a fire plus> be put on. the,main ; that in regard to the complaint made by Mr D. Henderson, r~ that the Turncock took a contract from a private person and executed the work '• within Borough hours. The Committee, i after tailing evidence, found that such was I not the case, but that a' portion a wheel required in 4he work was' made in the Borough workshop,. and recommended , that the Turncock be instructed that the workshop or tools of the Borough should not be used by any persons without the authority of the Committee, This report: was also adopted.—The Charitable Aid ' Committee recommended that an applicant be allowed to " work out" his rates i in Borough employment, and that assistance in repairing a house be not granted to an applicant. —Mr An» : rew,Fleming was appointed Borough Talner. ~r_ It was decided tbat the. question of appointing an inspector under the 'Adulteration of Food and
Drink Act should be considered at the next meeting, of the Council.—'Tbe request made by the lessee of the Recreation Ground, that be should liquidate his arrears of rent by ploughing a portion of the reserve, was not acceeded to.—The meeting then rose.
