NELSON.
This day.
The criminal information for libel preferred by Mr Jas. Sclanders, merohant of Nelson, against T. H. Mabin, average stater of Wellington, was heard yesterday ; the libel was said to have occurred in a lettar sent by the accused to Messrs Shaw, Saville, and Co., charging Mr Sclanders with having forged a document. At the close of the evidence the Magistrate intimated his intention of committing the accused, whereupon the defendant's counsel asked for an adjournment; to allow him to ask prosecutor to accept a free and ample apology, which he believed Mabin proposed to make. Mr Feel, for the prosecution, made no objection,- but said the apology must be of the most ample description, and absolutely unqualified. On the Court resuming, Mr Fell read a complete apology, and offered no objection to a withdrawal of the charge; the Magistrate said he felt some difficulty j in allowing a withdrawal, but would be j sorry to stand in the way of the undoubted leniency shown by the prosecutor. He discharged the defendant. . .
