This day. The French "WarshipThe following particulars regarding the L'Eclaireur, the French warship now here, will be interesting:—The L'Eclaireur was built at the dockyard, Toulon, in .1878. Her engines are of 1800 horse-power, . provided with a bronze spur or ram, for ramming her opponent when necessary. She is built of wood, and lined inside with iron two inches thick. In experiments made during the present voyage the lowest speed attained was ten knots; and the highest over 15. The L'Eclaireur at the conclusion of her st-iy ia Auckland proceeds to Noumea, in order to change her crew; the present complement being relieved, and proceeding to France. The L'Eclaireur left France on the 11th Oct, and since then has visited Monte Video, Callao, San Francisco, and all the principal ports of North aud South America.
Captain Fraser's double victory on Saturday, with Woodpecker and Trenton, was very popular. The totalisator dividend on the latter was £27 15s. r
Aa old resident najied Joseph Cook &}s& on Saturday, aged 99 years.
Mr Bryce was introduced to Lord Eoseberry yesterday afternoon, at the Northarn Club; in the evening he accompanied Mr Whitaker to the mail steamer, and bade him good-bye, Mr Whitaker being a passenger to Sydney to attend the Intercolonial Conference. Mr Eryce will be in this district for several weeks. He leaves for the Waikato in a day or two.
