Sir Stafford Nor thcole was to-day elected Eector of the University of Edinburgh, vice the Earl of Eoseberry. He defeated Mr G. 6. Trevelyan, Chief Secretary for Ireland, who was also a candidate for the Eectorship. - Large FireA disastrous fire occurred to-day in Buchanan street, Glasgow, at the warehouse? of Messrs Wylie and Lockheadi paper stainers. It raged for some time, and before the flames could be extinguished the building and contents were completely destroyed. The loss is set down at folly £200,000. Paris, November 3. M. Challomel-Lacour, speaking to-day at Cannes, announced that he had resigned, his position in the French Ministry, and that M. Ferry, Premier, would in the interim take the portfolio of Foreign Affairs. It is further stated that M. Ferry will next week ask the Chamber of Deputies to vote a credit of ten million francs to cover the expenses of the Tonquin expedition. :

London, November 2. The London Chartered Bank of Aus« tralia has declared a dividend of 3^ per cent, for the last half-year, and carried £10,000 to the reserve fund.

London, November 2. The Orangemen at Derry fired on a procession escorting the Mayor of Dublin, and two Catholics were wounded. Several riots ensued, but they have now been suppressed. The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce have agreed to support the proposals for the annexation ofNew Guinea.
Captain Johnstone, of H.M.B. Dryad has reported that, while bis vessel assisted a ; vessel to ballast, two of the French irien»of-war, now stationed at Tamatave, cleared for action, and pointed their Gatling guns at the Dryad.
The defeat of. E.l Mahdi, the False Prophet, is not confirmed.
