AUCKLAND.

This day,

An Auckland lawyer, wli6;haid;£4oo to £80 about Martini^Henry winning the Derby,; on Saturday morning went to the Bookmakers and offered £20 to cry the wager off; they refused, and doubtless now regret it.

Mr O'Sullivan, School Inspector, was thrown from his buggy on Saturday, and was severely shaken and cut.

The Auckland Football Union send.the following reply to the Wellington Union : —"In reply to yours of .-October'7,l beg to inform you that a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union Football Association took place on November the 2nd, at which it was agreed to express regret at the decision of your Union in declining to refer the dispute to the Southern Unions for arbitration* It was also resolved that your attention be drawn to the fact that the Southern (Sydney) Rugby Union has de-. cided that' a try to score is not a try unless an attempt is made at goal/ and that the Australasian (October 6) and the :Town and Country (Sydney) have both, in answer to Wellington correspondents, given the same decision. My committee trust you may deem this sufficient, but if you desire to still further prolong this wretched business, by reference to the English Union, they must of course agree, though it will ba obvious that this very evident shelving of the question will be generally deplored. —Awaiting an early reply."
