V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.
Melbourne, Saturday,
The first clay's races of the Victoria Bacing Club's Spring Meeting took place to-day at Fiemington. The attendance on the course was very large, and included Sir Win. Bobinson, Governor, of Tasmania. The Marquis of Normanby was not present, owing to family bereavement. The weather was fine during the day, though sultry; The following were the results of the various events: —
Melbourne Stakes, 1 mile ana a quarter : Commotion, 1; First Demon, 2; Le Grand, 3- Commotion won very easily. Time, 2mins 21|seos. Mabibyrnong Plate, fire furlongs : lolanthe, 1; King's Own, 2; David, 3. There was a fair start made, lolanthe and Bargo being first to get away: King of the Gipsies, Venetian, and David following. At the tan crossing The Broker wa3 prominent; the others were together in a lump. lolanthe was leading on entering the straight, with Bargo close up, but lolanthe came with a rush and increased her lead, and came in an easy winner by several lengths.' Eighteen horses started. Times, lmin. 2|secs. ; ; Selling Race, seven furlongs : Than* torn, 1; Egerton, 2; Mistake, 3. Eleven horses started. This "was a grand race, and Phantom won easily. Time, lmin. 27xsecs. -: ■ VICTORIA DERBY. Martini-Henri 1 Sardius ... 2 Hurricane ... ... ... 3 The betting at the post was 5 to 4 on Archie, 5 to 2 against Off Colour, 5 to 1 against Martini Henri, 7 to 1 against Sardius, 10 to 20 to 1 against the others. The following nine horses started :■— Archie, Hurricane, Little Sister, MartiniHenri, Napier, Off Colour, Sardius, Signer, and, Vernet. At the race, the Little Sister rushed away at the start, and led past the stand, followed by Sardius, Off Colour, Martini-Henry, Napier, Hurricane, and Vernet; Archie (who started badly) being last. At the first turn Little Sister was still leading, with Martini-Henri well up, Archie being still last. The race, was now terrific. At the bridge Off Colour Tin to second place, and Sardius and Sigribr were leading, Ma.rtini»Henri, and the farorite were still in the rear. This order was observed along the back of the course. At the abattoirs Little Sister led the van by three lengths, Sardius had deprived Off Colour of second place, and Martini-Henri was well up on Off Colour's quarter, Archie now endeavouring to get up. On rounding the turn Sardius deprived Little Sister of the lead, and Martini%Henri made a forward more. As they entered the straight Sardius led the field by two lengths, Martini-Henri being next, followed by Off Colotfr. At the distance Martini-Henri shot to the front, and came to the post an easy winner by
two length from Sardius, Hurricane third, Off Colour fourth, Archie fifth (under severe punishment), followed by Napier, Signor, Little Sister, and Vernet in the order named. The time was 2mins. 39secs., the fastest time on record in the world. The favorite, Archie, was hooted by the public as he came to the weighing paddock. Cobubg- Stakes, 1 mile and a furlong; Paul,!; Frying Pan, 2; The Joker, 3. Twenty six horses started, and this was a good race. Paul won easily by 2£ lengths. Time, Imin. 5.3 sees.- '...."-■
, Just before the start for the Melbourne Stakes, Delusion aad The Plunger were very restive, and cannoned with great violence, Delusion being killed by the collision.. The Jockeys of both horses were thrown and badly cut. \ BETTING FOR THE CUP. The following is the latest betting on the Cup :—Despot 10 to JU Martini-Henri 10 to 1, Sardius 10 to 1, Calma 11 to 1, Aidftdtf Camp 12 to 1, Claptrap 12 to 1. It is probable that the owner of Archie will proceed against Huxley, the Jockey, for his suspicious riding in the Derby today. ■ ■:■-■■■■■■- ■;■.-■.
