Borough Council.
The usual meeting was held last evening. Present—Crs McGowan (in the Chair), Carpenter, Mennie, Speight, Veale, and Wilson.—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. —Tbe following matters were referred to the Works Committee:—A letter from J. E. Banks, asking that a water-table be laid down in front of his residence in Willoughby street. From J. Eenshaw, asking that an excessive charge of footway rate be remitted. From J. McCowatt, lessee of the Hecreation Ground, stating his inability to pay his rent owing to the damage done to the fence by floating logs and trespassing cattle, bat his' willingness to do work equivalent to it. From Eickett and Allen to the effect that tho Borough workmen had moved the pegs of their reclamation contract further out to sea, thus causing a supply of 400 yards more filling than their original contract provided. From D. Henderson, complaining that a Borough employe was in the habit of doing work for private persons in tbe Borough hours, thus unfairly competing with the local tradesmen, and asking that an enquiry be made into the matter. From the Shortland Fire Brigade, urging the repair of the engine keeper's house. From T. G. Reid, pro* testing against the neglect of attention to Mackay street, south of Richmond street. 'An application from the Turncock, for authority to lay down a three-inch main in Willoughby street, between Pollen and Baillie street, was referred to the Water Supply Committee, as was also Mr J. Taylor's application for laying water to his residence.—Tararu Eoad: It was decided that a complaint made by the Inspector of Nuisances re the state of the drains on the eastern sides of Mackay and Brown streets be referred to the Foreman of Works.—That a recommendation to appoint an officer under the Food and Drink Adulteration Act should be considered at a future meeting.—The removal of Mrs Timmins from Davy street to Burkes Hotel was notified.— Accounts to the amount of £213 were passed for payment.—-The fee payable to the Borough Valuer was fixed at £30, and notice of motion was given by Cr Mennie, that Mr Fleming be re-appointed valuer. —The addition proposed to be made to the bye^law relating to pedlars and hawkers was proposed by Cr Carpenter. It was—" Any person or persons having a place or places of business in any locality outside the limits the Borough, who shall occupy premises within the Borough for the sale of goods other than fruit, vegetables, or fish, shall be deemed to be a hawker or pedlar within the meaning of this bye-law unless the occupation of such premises shall be con* tinuous for at least three calender months." Cr Mennie seconded, and after r a short discussion it was put and lost.—The meeting then closed. |
