The Vacant Portfolio.
MR MITCHELSON CHOSEN.
(FEOM OUB OWN COBBEBPONDEN0 1).
- Auckland, This day.
As I telegraphed to you yesterday, Mr Mitchelson had been offered a seat in the Cabinet, but had refused it; but further influence being brought to bear, he has accepted. There is great consternation about the selection, and none would credit your correspondent who mentioned yesterday in town the probability of Mr Mitchelson being chosen. Mr Mitchelson was born in Auckland, and made his money during the last few years by dealing in timber and gum, and storekeeping.
(from anotheb cobbespondent.)
Auckland, This day.
Mr Mitchelson, member for Marsden, has been offered and has accepted a seat the Cabinet, with the portfolio of Public Works. The Hon. Mr Johnston resigns the office within a fortnight, and Mr Mitchelson will enter on his official duties at once.
