We leorn that Mr W. J. Barlow, who is taking an active part in the getting up of the coming benefit performance for Mr Elrick, solicited the services of the Band of the Naval Artillery to play outside the Academy on the night in question, and that he has received a reply from the Band declining' the honor. Considering that Mr Barlow was instrumental in handing over to- a Naval Bandsman no lees a sum than £35, obtained at a benefit performance given by the -Naval Cadet Minstrel Troupe a few months ago, we do not think the members of the Band can have much gratitude in their composition.
. The Blue Ribbon Army held their usual meeting last night in the Temperance Hal), Mr Ashby presiding. Song*, recitations, and speeches, which aroused the enthusiasm and gained the applause of a large audience, were given. Several new members joined, the ranks of the Army. ':-.,.

Thk Queen of Beauty mine and plant was put up to auction in Auckland yesterday, and was bought by the newly formed company for the sum of £4,700, which is about £700 in excess of the debts owing by the old company. The directors will probably meet on Friday next, and a very short time Bhould see operations once more in full swing. The contractors for extending the Bird-in-Hand oroSa-cufc at No. 8 level will finish their 100 ft this week; The face is passing through good country.
Thk adjourned meeting of the Thames Branch of the Irish National League was held last night. The secretary reported having forwarded subscription lists to the Upper Country, in accordance with a resolution passed at the last meeting. Several sub* scriptions were handed in, and it was resolved that a meeting ;be held at 8 o'clock on Friday night next, in the Hibernian Hall, for the purpose of electing a managing committee.

The Volunteer Commission to enquire into an alleged breach of regulations sat to-day. The board, consisting^ of Major Shepherd; Capt. Douglas,: and Lieut. Scott, took the evidence of the captain of the Naval Artillery for the prosecution, and of the gunner accused and a witness on his behalf for the defence. The Board will report to the Defence Minister.
Thb annual meeting of the friends of and -subscribers to the Thames Orphanage was held kst eveaing, The Mayor presided; Tlie report was to the effect that the health nnd progression of the inmates of tVe institution were safactory. During the four years it has been open forty children had been received into it; during last year seven entered—four committed by the Magistrate, and three received: by arrangement; twelve, boys and three girls remained. The cost of the children in the Home was found by. the Government to be higher than in any other institution in the colony, which was owing to the small number of inmates. The cost of support was Is 2d per head per day. The achool hud been visited' by Government inspectors j the. building had been painted; a piece of land - had been purchased to make an approach to the bridge to the Orphanage, over the K»uaeranga River j. and thanks to the subscribers and the members of the Sewing Bee were recorded. The report was adopted. The retiring members of Committee were re-elected, and votes of thanks passed to them and the Chairman.
Bbnrbt Owen, an apprentice on board the Wuikato, ljing at Lyttelton, was picked up from the lower hold of that vessel yesterday evening, with his skull fractured and an eye terribly damaged., He had been walking between decks late in the afternoon and was missed when the hatches were put on for the night. The officer in charge becoming anxious at his non-appearance, ordered the hatches to be taken off, as it was thought that whilst walking about with his hands in liis pockets he mast hare tripped over the ombings of the hatch. He fell a distance of 14 feet. Owen was conscious when brought on deck, and the doctor has hopes of his life. His father is Gh W. Owen, merchant, Auckland.

The Bay of Plenty Times has the following:—"The Yen. Archdeacon Brown entered his eighty first year on Tuesday last. The venerable gentleman dined with a few of his old intimate friends on the occasion. The severe wiater had tried him greatly during the past season.
