OwM of the speakers at last night's Odd , Fellows' banquet said that an authority had j been given for the institution of a lodge of i the Order at Te Aroha. The following information has been received by the Postmaster, and kindly place-! I at our disposal. The repairing steamer Agnes, which was at work on the old cable about 100 miles east of Banjoewangi, fouled and broke the existing cable on Monday last. Great difficulty was experienced on account of adverse weather. One line has been put | through, and the steamer has had to return to port to coal and replace the cable gear lost and carried away. It is anticipated that the second line will be put through on the return of the steamer to the position of the break. The Harbor authorities have had a stand 1 for horses made on the northern side of the Goods Wharf, just inßide the silt works. This will prove a great convenience to horsemen who have occasion to go down the wharf, as they can leave their horses there while attending to their business. Amebioanibms are expressive, but for brevity and force combined, one of thoae attending the Oddfellows' dinner, held last evening, must be commended. A speaker said the footpaths in Pollen street were excellent, and added, " but I suppose you people have to pay for it. The laconic reply from a brother of " You bet" spoke volumes. The underground fire in the Caledonian workings now appears to be quite extinct, as the manager has nearly completed the renovation of No. 1 level without having seen any sign, of sparks, though the ground :1s still warm. The last outbreak did no damage beyond crushing one set of timber, the fire having evidently been very nearly, if not quite, extinguished by the water thrown on it.

In the Warden's Court yesterday afternoon, after our report closed, the evidence for the defence in the case of Greenville v. Edwards was heard. E. R. Edwards deposed that aft jr the first agreement had become null and void he never promised a half share in the Hibernia Licensed Holding to defendant as alleged. He did promise to ask Mr Scott, legal manager, to put defendant down for half a share, but when he requested Mr Scott to do this, that gentleman refused. He had never admitted that defendant was entitled to a half share. After Mr Lush had 13dressed the Court far the defence, and Mr Miller for plaintiff, His Worship summed up the evidence, holding that though defendant had promised the half share to plaintiff, and the plaintiff could have obtained his interest on demand from the legal manager when the company was floated, be had taken no steps to secure the half share or offered to pay calls on it, till gold was struck and the scrip became valuable, and therefore the promise of defendant W£3 not calkd upon for fulfilment. The plaintiff would on these grounds be nonsuited. The only other case was a plaint by J. Garvey against H. R. McGregor, to obtain poeseseion of the Shamrock Claim, Waiotabi Creek, on the ground of non-working by defendant. After hearing plaintiff's evidence His Worship awarded the ground to him.

News of a most encouraging nature is to hand from the Champion Copper mine, near Nelson. The main lode has been driven on a distant a of 2CO feet, and a crosscut was put in to strike the second lode, called the "Doctor's" lode. On Thursday last this lode was struck at a distance of 120 feet from the main lode. Tbe " Doctor's " lode is thus proved to exiet 240 feet horizontally from the gully where the outcrop exists, »nd at a per-' pendicular depth of 120 feet from the surface. At that point two lodes are shown tj run parallel, and the "Doctor's," consisting of yellow sulphides and native copper, is apparently very rich. The result has caused much excitement in Nelson, and it ifi understood that the proprietors purpose forming a larger company to work the deposits.

The " Man about Town" says that the crowds of people that visit Meabs & Co.'s establishment, in Pollen street, daily, is a sufficient proof of the genuine bargains that they obtain. At this great clearing-out sale of Groceries, Tea, and Provisions the whole of the stock must be cleared at any price at an early date. Now is the time to lay in a stock of provisions.
