Ohinemuri Goldfield.

(FKOM OTXB OWN COBBEBPONDENT).

Paeroa, Yesterday

I visited the Tahiralii Creek coal deposit on Monday kst in company with Messrs Hogg and Kerr, who are taking active parts in the matter of its development. The coal formation here is situate west of and runs parallel with the auriferous belt of country which traverses the Waitekauri, Owharoa, and Karangabake districts. The place where the coal seams are exposed to view in the bottom and sides of the above mentionr d crcik is distant about three and a quarter; milr3 from tb.3 head of navigation on the Ohinemuri river, with which it can be connected by means of a dray road or tramway at a comparatively trifling cost, there being no engineering difficulties whatever in the way. No. 1 seam, which is about 3ft 6in in thickness, has a W.E." strike with a S.E. underlie, and o-ufcrops for a cousiderable distance along liie sides and bottom of the creek. It is a well defined compact body lying upon a " fireclay " bed; with.a M trap rock" banghgwall, and manifests-such regularity of strike and uniformity in structure as to warrant the belief that it will ultimately prove to be both valuable and extensive. No. 2 seam, which lies immediately above' Nd. 1, is about 18 inches in thickness, and will undoubtedly junction with No, 1 at no considerable distance from their respective outcrops where they are but a few feet apart.t There seams are composed of what is known in coal minirg parlance as "glance coal." In appearance and general cb.arr.cter. they are pre« cisely similar to the well known Taupiri coal seams, and judging from what I saw on Monday I am confident that they will proTe to be equally productive. Prospecting operations, witn a view to deter pining the extent and value of this coal deposit) were started this morning under ihe supervision of Mr Kerr, who has already bad; -considerable experience in fcqiaj mining out here and in the Mother Country, and I wish him every success in his new venture.
