AUCKLAND.

This day.

A united demonstration of the city school children is proposed for Christmas, and the establishment of a public school at Freeman's Bay is mooted.

It appears'that during the progress of Garretts fire, one of the carpenters engaged on the alterations to the premises broke into them to get his tools out, despite the remonstances of Mr Garrett, who desired him not to give chance of a draught feeding the flames before the Fire Brigade could get on the ground. The insurance company consider this act cost them a couple of thousand pounds, as when the draught of air got into the premises, the fire swept through the warehouse like a furnace, clearing every thing before it.

, The following advertisement appears in the Herald today:—" Daniels—Watson. —H. Daniels to Alice May Watson ;no cards, no cake, nobody's business."

It is stated on good authority that the Premier will pay a short visit to Auckland at at early date on private business, but at the same time he will probably fix up arrangements for the representation of Auckland in the Cabinet. In the end it is believed Mr Peacock will be selected, although I know Ministers wonld have preferred Mr Eeader Wood had he been a member of the Lower House. I know some of them greatly regret this, as they fear Mr Peacock's recent entry into public life may not give the weight they are looking for. On the other hand, it is felt, that he is a safe man and thoroughly to be trusted.
