AUSTRALIAN.

Hobaet, This day,

The Government has decided to prorogue the Tasmanian Parliament until the 15th of November, when they will introduce the Railway Bill, which was recently thrown out by the Legislative Council.

Melboubne, Yesterday,

Harry Thomas, who attempted to commit suicide in a bank in this city on the Ist instant, has been released from custody under surety of £100 for good behaviour.

Caulston and Robert the Devil have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, held the opening wool sale for the season to day. There was a crowded attendance of Home aud foreign buyers. The catalogue comprised 2130 bales, of which all but 25 were sold. Competition was very brisk, and the prices realised were very satisfactory to the growers. Greasy wool sold up to 12-g-d, and scoured to 19jd; the prices generally were about equal to the rates ruling at the close of last season. Owing to a considerable improvement which has been manifested in the latest London advices, the prospects for the Melbourne sale are exceedingly good, and it is known that extensive buying orders are on hand.

The following is this evening's betting quotations on the Caulfield Cup :—Calma 7 to 1, Footstep 7 to 1, Frying Pan 14 to 1, Norfolk 14 to 1. The Y.E.C. Derby: Archie 3 to 1, Martini Henri 5 to 1, Off Colour 5 to 1, Sardius 7 to 1.

Sydney, Yesterday. In the Legislative Council this evening a bill to amend Acts relating to contempt of Court, was again brought up for consideration. The second reading of the measure was moved by the Hon, W. B. Dalley, and the discussion on the motion was still proceeding when the House rose, and the debate was then adjourned.
