LABOUR REPORT.
wR. M. Brighton and Co., Labour/Agents, 177, Queen street, report:—Owing to the unseasonable and'stormy weather, out-door works have been almost suspended ; this has had a most depressing effect on the labour market,; and in consequence few engagements have been made. There is however every appearance of the weather clearing up, when all will be activity and bustle again. Current wages:' Couplesj £60 to £85; ploughmen, £52 ; gardeners, £63 per annum, all found; farm men, grooms, hotelmen, 15s to 20s ; cooks, 25a to 30s j youths and boys for country, 5s to 15s, town, 5s to 10s per week and found. Day labour: bush* road, andrail, 63 to Bs, contractors offering 9s 6i; carpenters, blacksmiths,: 8s tolOsY bricklayers, masons, 10s to 12s per day. Female servants: Good business has been done, country demands on the increase, and wages firm. Barmaids, cooks, 15s to 30s j housemaids, waiteresaes, laundresses, general servants, town and hotels, 10s to 15s, for country, able to cook and wash, 12s to 20s; nursemaids and nursegirls, 5s |to 10s per week. Dairymaids, £36 to £40; governesses and housekeepers, £30 to £50 per annum.
