St. Francis' Churcn, Wil.loughby street, was filled with large congregations yesterday, at both morning and evening eervicea. At the 11 o'clock mass Father O'Rielly was the celebrant, assisted by Father Downey, Bishop Luok taking pa?t. An impressive service was the result. During the celebration His Lordship administered confirmation to about fifty boys and girls, and delivered a powerful and lucid address to them in connection with their reception of the sacrament. A full choir rendered portions of Winter's mass expressively and with care. In the evening Vespers and Benediction were given, and the Bishop delivered his pastoral charge, advocating the support of the dchools attached to the Church, objecting to mixed marriages, and complimentin* the people and congratulating the pastor on the religious condition of the parish. The choir was more effective m the evening than at the morping aemce.

Mr Hicks, manager of the Caledonian, noticed jan increased volume of steam ascending the No. 2 shaft yesterday, and conjecturing that all wa3 not right, he himself covered the shaft over, stopping the draught. He went below, but could not see the fire for smoie till to-day, when he saw it above a new drive lately put in by the company's men at No. 1 level, at a point where the men had passed through without discovering any ember or spark. Tho No. 2 shaft was again partly uncovered -to give the men air, and every effort was then made to drown the fire with water sent from the surface. These measures have apparently been successful in the spot mentioned, but whether the fire is burning ab another part of the level cannot yet be determined. Should the fire continue, the manager Will again erect a dam at No. 1 level, and stop.up every possible inlet by which ventilation can reach the burning wood. •

The " Shaughraun " wa3 presented to a fair house in the Academy on Saturday night with a similar ca3t to that of its previous production. Mr Russell was very successful as Con, and the .remainder of the company acquitted themselves well.

One of the members of our local police force was hovering round a certain hotel, rumor hath it in the hope of a rase of Sunday trading, when he saw a youthful pedestrian enter the premises adjoining, carrying a kit in his hand. Of course, the " bobby's" suspicions were aroused, as to whether the lad was not aiming to reach the back door of the place of refreshment, and when he came out again the representative of the law waylaid him and graffly enquired " What be had in the basket ?" at the same time confiscating the article in question. His feelings can be better imagined than described when he found that the contents were half-a-dozen eggs, instead of the expected "black bottle."
