A fire broke out at the Corporation's asphalt works in Courtenay Place this morning, resulting in the gutting of the building in which the concrete blocks are made. The fire originated through the tar boiling over. The building is insured, but the amount is not yet known.
The Corporation buildings, which took fire, were insured for £320 in the Colonial Office, the amount being reinsured in equal amounts among the various insurance companies in Wellington. The damage is estimated at £50. This is the third or fourth time the building has been on fire.
The Albion Gold Mining Co., at Terawhiti, which has been crushing since the Golden Crown Co. stopped, cleaned up on Monday; the amount of stone put through was 332 tons, resulting as follows : 30| ounces of amalgam, and lOf ounces of retorted gold. . The battery manager suggests that the Company should start a low level tunnel, as he is of opinion that better gold exists than has been struck at present. The directors have decided to take out 50 tons of quartz from a low tunnel as a trial crushing.
