A deputation waited on Mr Dick today, re the establishment of two reformatories for the Colony, The Colonial Secretary was opposed to the proposal, and suggested that the deputation should interview the Minister of Justice. The Kelson bequest of a thousand pounds is in favor of the Dunedin hospital. This day. James Galloway, a laborer, while fishing at the mouth of the Shag Hirer with a net, was drowned yesterday evening. A four-roomed wooden bouse in Duke street, occupied by Edward Clempsom, was burned down this morning. The fur-' niture and stock were insured for £200 in the London and Lancashire Cos. Clempson estimates his loss at £370; the building was owned by John Golder, and was insured in the Hamburg-Madgburg office for £150. Before the commencement of the eastern arm is requisite, he will reconsider •if the, width of the entrance —1500 feet—will suffice to afford the the necessary amount concentrated, but not to an extent to make it dangerous on the bursting of seas. The absence of the] eastern mole will create a fluctuation in the depth at the entrance, which will prove inconvenient to vessels of deep draught. The estimated cost of the works is £190,000,
