Intebnal dissension has a ruinous effect, arid wherever or whenever it betrays itself there is evidence of constitutional weakness, and consequent - outside suspicion as to the health of the people or institution so attacked. For years past the prosperity of the northern end of the colony has been apparently a source of no inconsiderable annoyance to the south, more particularly to Otago, and why this should be it is rather difficult to even conjecture; unless one be forced to uncharitableness, and attribute the feeling to the idea that our Southern friends, although blessed with productive lands, a splendid climate, and such rare natural gifts; are somewhat envious of us in the possession ofthemanyiadTantages which ire can fortunately boast of, and which they—we regret it quite as much as they can—lack. The latent evidence we have of the existence of such an unhealthy feeling is the report of a Southern official, the marine Surveyor of Otago, in which he gratuitously seeks to, damage the Northern portion of the colony, and we regret to have to admit that owing to the position owe friend occupies, his rapourings may have a small amount of effect in some quarters: This o&ciai b&s Reported to the effect that in the course of inspecting two vessels ho discovered that kauri was apt as suitable for shipbuilding purposes »s was generally supposed, #nd he expressed the opinion ,that it was mucfy j inferior to many ether specified colonial - broods, Although" regretting that Jfc.his
marine surveyor should condemn one of the berffc shipbuilding timbers to be obtained, in bo summary a manner, and while bewailing his action, holding the view tlsat some may pay attention to his expressions, we cannot allow to go without remonstrance, statements made through ignorance, or prompted by the unworthiest feelings. Persons who have used kauri in all kinds of work where it has been brought into contact with water hare always given that.valuable timber credit for withstanding the attacks of the aquatic enemies which have proved destructive to other materials. Not only in ship-building'has the timber proved its virtues, but injbh'e construction of wharves and otber sea*sw>rk it has been equally efficacious, have seen kauri used in drainage work near the sea, Imposed to "the action of salt water and the many insects which live in it, and after the timber Had -been laid down twelve years, .it was removed and found to beas sound' as the, day it was first put down. The experience'gained by shipowners, of the virtues of kauri cause the Auckland ! builders to have their hands continually full, in carrying ou^ orders, for " new boats" and although" it may not be absolutely necessary to take much notice of the absurd deliverance of this lOtagan judge,,at is as well not to let judgment go by default, but to simply say that the opinion given by this would-be authority is altogether.unreliable, and without the faintest foundation to substantiate it.
The manager of the Bright Smile G.M.Co. telegraphed this afternoon as foHows:—"sOlbs specimens, irom stopes.—J. Gakvey;" On Saturday night next the Academy of Music will be opened by an Auckland company, producing Arrah-na-Pogue. Nearly all tbfe members are old favorites, and for the week's seaaoh announced they present a very attractive list of plays. MsT.Kerr was summoned to appear at the Police Court this morning, for allowing the chimney of his house to catch fire. . Mrs Kerr said the chimney, wa3 swept regularly every four week?, and site could not account for the accident; there were four fireplaces communicating with the same chimney. The case was dismissed as no negligence was proved in the occurrence. The email railway engine being constructed at Price Bros.' foundry is fast approaching completion, and it will probably be sent to its destination next week. It is to be employed drawing trucks on the Waiorongomai tramway. War. Paoe, licensee of the City of Glasgow Hotel, Tararu'Road, was charged by the police this morning with Sunday trading.' The case was that a member of the force saw a young woman coming out of the hotel on Sunday k.~jt and ascertained that she had a bottle of beer in a kit, which she said had been supplied to her by the defendant. The defence was that the girl was ia Page's employ, and if she cared for the beer Bhe could have it- at any time; she did not drink it, but took it home every night to her father. The Bench having no evidence to the contrary, took defendant's version of the affair, and dismissed the case.
The particulars of the fatal assault committed by one patient on another in the Auckland Lunatic Asylum are as follows: Gschaell, the attacking party, was suffering from hotnoeidal mania, having killed a man in Taranaki, and had been coDfined in the Asylum for 18 months. His victim was J. J. Mills, formerly a furniture dealer in Auckland. The warder in whose charge Gschnell had been placed went for his breakfast, leaving the dangerous lunatic without a keeper. Gbchnell, taking advantage of the warder's absence, seized a -heavy broom and struck Mills twice On the head with it. It appears reprehensible in the highest degree that any person affected with - homocidal mania should be left for a moment without proper supervision. No one witnessed the assault, which took place in a room occupied solely by Mills and Gachnell, but the attendants became cognisant of the' occurrence immediately afterwards, and G-sehnell was seized and lodged in a cell. Dr Young despatched a messenger to the residence of Mr Mills, jun., a cabinetmaker, and he arrived before his father's death. The warder has been suspended pending an inquest;.
Mb Cecil Gardner's penny time table for the current month is again to hand, and as usual contains a vast amount of upeful information in a handy and most concise form; A deputation in Dunedin waited on the Hon. Mr Dick, to ask that the Industrial School children might be allowed out fon parole to go to Church, not in a body, but mixing with the various congregations India criminately. The Hon. Mr Dick promised to consult the master of the school on the subject.
A fire broke out in Auckland last night shortly after 10 o'clock in Belcher's block of shops, KaraDgahape road, occupied by Davis, Ryan, and IFeaton, grocers. The buildings, which were all destroyed, were insured in the New Zealand office £200. The fire was confined to the block in which it originated. Mrs Ryan was insured for £100 in the National. The adjoining two-atorey house, also Belcher's, occupied by Me Snell, was damaged, but not greatly. This was insured in the New Zealand for £500. It is expected that shortly after Edwards and Scott begin their 24 hours' walking match on Friday night next in Dunedin, the Rev. Mr Bynq will be present and say a few words appropriate to the occasion, referring to moral and physical training, "The witnesses in the Southland man. slaughter case against the Roys turned up yesterday, and it was proceeded with. The defence was that the lads fired for amusement and that they knew nothing of the train which happened to pass at the time. The jury were absent consulting for about two hours, and then returned into Court with a verdict of guilty against both prisoners, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of their previous good character. They did not think that the firearms were discharged with any intention to injure anyone, tijs Honoj: agreed with the jury, and said hp would , give the fullest effect to their recomg mendation he could consistent wijb his duty to the public. So fas as Alexander, the younger, was concerned, his Honor thought that the ends of justice would be met by his father entering into a recgnisance for his future good behaviour; no sentence would be .passed on him. The elder prisoner, John Boy, was sentenced to two months' imprison' ment withqut hard labour. A Wish Dbacok.—"Deacon Wilder, I want you to tell me how you kept yourself and family bo well the past season, when all the rest of ub have been siok so much, and have had the doctors running to us"so often." "Brother Taylor, the answer is very easy. I used Hop Bitters in time, and kept my family well, and saved large doctor's bills. Four shillings' worth of it kept us all well and able to work all the time, and I will warrant it has cost you and most of the neighbors £10 to £100 apiece to keep siok the same time. I fancy you'll take my medicine hereafter." See. , *
