Mb James Marshall informs his numerous customer/; through our odiums that he has now fully opened up his new stock of Spring and Summer goods, received from London per steamer, and that for variety, quality, style, and cheapness, it has never before been equalled here. Afe the Shortland establishment the old stock was completely cleared by the late sale, and the same remarks as to the new goods apply with equal force to it.
The County Council has received from the Government a sum of £3500 on account of kauri trees sold at Hikutaia, which sum was stopped by the Crown Lands department some time ago. The Auckland Waste Lands Board apparently considers itself entitled to the Bum of 25s per tree in the district, but it would appear more feasible, according to the " Financial Arrangement Act," that the County is entitled to the revenue.
Thb Thames Cricket Club expects to receive, itt the course of a few weeks, a good supply of material from London, which they have purchased at a much cheaper rate than it can be obtained in the Colony.

Were it not for over zeal in hia duliss this unfortunate occurrence would not have takew place, as the sufferer has been exceedingly uaweil if}fmg the pasfc few days, and should not hate item afegsp in such inclement weather. The House Committee of tbo Hospital, stf> «£ .their meeting this afternoon decided — after be^ng both parties—to instruct the dispenser to lay aft /n/ormation at the Police Court, for disorderly conduct &gaift?t the two* inmateß of the Old Men's Refnge who wer f $ , " battering " each other on Friday last.
THBunderground fire at the Golden Crown spur is evidently etill smouldering, as dutiog the past few days smoke and steam has found its way through the loose ground at the top of the Caledonian No. 2 shaft, and at the mouth of the Crown battery level. The fire is apparently some distance above No. 1 level, as the Caledonian wordings are all free of either smoke or gas, the only mine hindered being the Crown, whose men are confined to the shaft leaders.

Three bacchanalians held audience with the Beßident Magistrate this morning. The first was a party named Jones, yclept "the ancient cobbler," his punishment was a fine of sa, or imprisonment till the rising of the Court, and it was borne with becoming dignity. No 2, John Whewell, owned up to a third offence within two months, and upon promising to go to work was let off with the same leniency. The third, a gentleman named Murphy, frith an inflamed countenance and unsteady gaze, said he had been taking medicine, and it was too much for him— appearances favored the " too much" part of this narrative. James waß remanded for three days for further medicine, the Court stating that in the meantime the doctor would ccc him. .
Dueing an interview with the District Engineer in Auckland, the County representatives endeavored to point out the loss sustained by Mr P. Trainor, a contractor for certain work on the Mackaytown-Owharoa road. It appears that the severe floods in February last washed away about 100 yards of metal which was stacked and ready to spread, and which had to be replaced, and a part of the road, which entailed further cutting and forming, and that all this work has been done. The destruction of the road and metal was no fault of the contractor, who, ,we believe, only seeks to be paid at contract rates for the extra work he has done, and the material he has supplied.
A GBNEBAIi meeting of the Thames Crioket Club was held at the Royal Hotel on Saturday evening, but on account of the bad weather which prevailed there was not a very large attendance. Mr Fletcher presided. Mr Spencer was re elected President, Mr Ehrenfried Vice-Preßident, and Messrs Clark and Egginton captain and secretary respectively. The fee for playing members was fixed at 7s 6d instead of ss, as previously, as the latter amount was not found sufficient to meet expenses last year. Honorary members tickets were made 10a 6d each. Messrs' Clark, >Frater, Hoskins, Tregonriing, Airey, Lough, and Egginton were appointed a selection committee, and a number of new members were proposed. Practice is to, commence , vigorously this evening, and on Saturday next a match, First Eleven versus next Twenty-two of the Club will take place on the WaioEaraka Flat. Some people B»y the days of intolerance are past and gone, and yet, if a correspondent of the Lyttelton Times is to be believed, the following took place a few days ago in Christchurch. He says :—At the great temperance meeting, held the other day, one gentleman, in the course of his speech, suid that all publioanß out to be put outside the pale of every religious denomination, and a rev. gentleman present said that he " endorsed those views in every way, and that; not only publicans, but also brewers, wine and spirit merchants, &c, should be- denied all religious sympathy whatever." Some of those parsons are going for the nice littla game of abolishing—of course unintentionally—their own calling.

In Dunedin about noon oti Saturday an altercation took place which has caused some excitement. Mr Ashcroft, late editor of the Ofcago Daily Times, when coming out of the post office, deemed a remark made by Mr Smith, a solicitor, landing there with a friend, to be insulting. Aahoroft asked Smith to repeat his remark, and on doing so the former struck him with a stick he was carrying, but the friend succeeded in preventing further hostilities.
Tsts •wrestling match between George Robertson (the present champion in the Border style), and Joseph Strong took place at the Caledonian Society's grounds, Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon. A stake of £100 and the Society's Championship Belt depended upon the issue. Strong; stripped a little over 14 stone, while Robertson, the halfcaste, nearly turned the scale at 17 stone. The first fall occupied a lot of time, as the men were very cautious about getting a hold. The first time they locked after an obstinate tussle, Strong wriggled out of his opponent's grip, and claimed a fall on the ground that the latter had broken his hold, The judges, .however, disallowed it, and on closing again Robertson got the belt grip, and after a fpw moments of intense excitement , cross-buttocked his antagonist. After a long interval for rest, the men again met, and onoe more the superior strength of the half-caste proved to much for his opponent, and be won the first, two falls, and was declared the winner.—A good deal of amusement was caused by Capt. Jackson Barry, who, at tbe close of tbe match stripped and tried a fall with the gigantic champion j the latter literally sat down after a fictitious struggle, and allowed the gallant captain the honour of a victory.
