AUCKLAND.
This day.
The torpedo' boats tested at London yesterday were built by Thornycroft and Co., at Chiswick, and belong to what ig known as the " second class." Their dimensions are about the same as those constructed for Victoria, which are feet in length, 7 feet 6inches in beam, with a draught of 3 feet 2 inches, and a displacement of 12| tons. Their contract speed is 16 knots. Unlike the Victorian torpedo boats, however, they are armed with Mclvory's spare torpedo, and it is understood that they will carry the Whitehead torpedo as an auxiliary armament, in which case the weapons will be discharged by means of Thornycroft's side-frame apparatus. One of the boats is intended for Auckland, and the other three will be stationed at Wellington, Port Lyttelton, •■ and Port Chalmers respectively. a The City Council have decided to order a 15 ton steam roller.
