OUR MINES.

NEW PEINCE IMPERIAL. The No. 2 reef was again taken down to-day in the eighth stope west above No. 5 level, at a point 30 feet seaward of the break, and 2cwt. of rich specimens were bagged, gold being left showing in the roof. This makes 7cwt. from this'stope in the last 30 feet. The No. 2 reef, in the winze below No. 5 level, which has been heaved for a short, distance, is coming in again. at the eastern end, but none of the quartz has -yet been broken. The manager reported on Saturday :—" The batteries have reduced 170 loads of quartz during the past week, which have yielded 802ozs of amalgam, making the total amount now on hand for the fortnight 14870z5. The winze on the No. 2 lead below No. 5 level is now sunk lift. The lead, has been very small for the last few feet. To-day a small head has been discovered crossing through it that has evidently thrown it into the hangingwall. In abouS 15 or 20ft the hangingwall leader should drop into the No. 2 lead, when the latter should make a good strong lead. Although no gold has as yet been seen, the country is most promising. There are now on hand llcwt of specimens and picked stone, 3cwt of which have come to hand this week from the eighth stope on No. 2 lead westward of the break on No. 5 level. The lead never looked better than it does at present in this stope. In the seventh stope gold is seen freely, but no picked stone has been received. The ninth stopa is forward past the point; where the hangingwall and footwall branches junction, This stops should produce some specimens during the coming week. The 10th stope is now fairly under way from the winze, and should be before the end of the month over the point where the good hauls of specimens were obtained

in the Bt.h and 9th stops. A few pounds of picked stone have come to hand- to day from the stopes on the eastern side of the winze. Driving on No. 1 reef at No. 4 level has been resumed. The reef continues to maintain its, size and appearance. In the leading stope the reef was broken out for fully 9 feet in width, all of which stuff went to the battery. From this reef also 70 loads of quartz have passed through the battery separately during the past week, -for the yield of 2300zs amalgam.— G. S. Clark." DEEP LEVEL CROSS. The winze on the hangingwall leader at No. 5 level is now 20ft. in depth. The leader, which is from 5 to 8 inches in -width, was broken down yesterday, and showed colors of gold. DART. The foofcwall portion of No. 2 reef was touched in the crosscut at No. 3 level this | morning, the lode proving <L\ feet thick | from wall to wall. No geld was seen in the footwall portion, but this is not to be wondered at, as the men had only broken down a small portion of the quartz. The footwall portion of the reef is a strong body of solid quartz fully 18 inches wide, and anotheivafoot thick forms the bangingwall, while the space between is composed of stringers and reins of quartz surrounded by mullock. The manager will open out both ways on the reef without delay, so as to get a supply of crushing dirt. SEYMOUE The crosscut east at the 180 ft level having been advanced about 90ft without intersecting aoy reef answering to the description of the Lucknow reef, the manager is inclined to the belief that the reef cut in the chamber is the one he has been in search of. He has/therefore, stopped the crosscut for the present, though at some future time he will, if opportunity offers, push it on again, as good country for gold is being penetrated, and other lodes are known to exist in this direction. A rise is being put up on the 1 reef referred to on the shaft side of where it was* heaved by the slide. This is now up 15ft, and both country and reef have shown a great improvement. The latter ia 18 inches ia thickness, and has shown strong colors and dabs of gold. The manager believes the quartz is of payable grade, and will put a few loaHs through shortly. The rise will be carried straight up, and if the reef is the Lucknow lode, it will break into old workings 100 feet from the level. A rise is also in progress on a leader passed through in the crosscut, and which is thought to be identical with the specimen leader. No gold has been seen,, but both country and. quartz are improving greatly. The manager has started to drive on this leader, and considers that he will reach the junction of the first-mentioned reef in 60 feet. GOLD RETURNS. Don Pedbo.—Wilson and party have crashed 2J tons for the return of 53ozs ldwt gold.
