Coincident with recent tidal disturbances all over the worJd, the water of Lake Taupo fell X 8 inches for balf-an-hour, and then slowly rose to their old level. The trout ova hatching goes on very satisfactorily. Me?sra Steedman, E. N. Smith, and Allom met to-day spscially to inspect and consider the condition of the young fish and remaining ora. It was decided that nothing further is required to be done at present, as it was very gratifyiug to find that out of 3000 ova placed in the hatching boxes on the 6th instant, there remain te be hatched out only from 250 to»300, all of w-ich appear to bo in a very healthy State. The above-named gentlemen will now be glad to hear from any persons wh© are willing to undertake the carriage of limited numbers of the young fin and to deposit them in suitable streams. A SLIGHT accident happened last evening to a man named P. Sullivan, working in the Deep Level Cross stopes on the hangingwall leader at No. 5 level. He was examining the ground after a shot had been fired, when a stone fell from the roof, etriking him on*the back of the head' and shoulders. He was able to walk haine. The Harbormaster received the following telegram at noon to-day from R. A. Edwin :— " Between north and east and south-east glass further fall, and within 12 hours good deal raio, and heavy rainfall after that time." Atbiephonb station has been opened at Parnell, Auckland. Messes- Pickering and Co.'s flix mill at Spring Creek, Blenheim, was totally destroyed by fire on Thursday evening, only the wheel being-, saved. The insurances are in the Liverpool, London, and Globe for £300. Tin j loss is estimated at £515. j A HAN named Rowland fell down dead at Manawaoou railway contract, Hawera, on Thursday night. He. had come from Wan; ganui. where he said that be had been under a doctor.
A highly satisfactory report was given by the Grown Lands Hanger to the Auckland Waste Lands Board, of the improvements effected on Messrs Grant and Foster's special settlement of 20,000 acres, at Te Aroha. The report Btated that 44 families were residing on the land selected by them. There have bacn 47 dwelling-houses (45 being the re- j quired number) erected for the settlers, the ' estimated value being £6,339. There hay» also been erected by the settlers other building to the value of £2,040. The area of land taken up by the settlers is 6,716*'2r 34p ; the area under cultivation, 2,581 a 2r. The latter includes one thousand and seventyeight acres grass surface sown, fern land, common harrowed, grass surface sown, fern land, and land ploughed in fallow. The total values of improvements are as follows :—: Lapd ploughed and in grass, £1823 2j 6d: land disc harrowed, and grass, £93 15s ; land swamp, drained and grass, £664 10s; land surface sown and in grass, £136 5s j land j ploughed and in fallow, £647 3s ; land, other cultivations, £381 7s 6d ; drainage works, £1,994 19a 6d j fencing, £2,626 4a 3d j dwelling houses, £6,339; other buildings, £2,040. The case of alleged ohild murder at Hawera was again gone into yesterday. No further evidence of importance was forthcoming The Bench were of opinion that there was strong circumstantial evidence, but not sufficient to commit, and the charge was dismissed. The Graffcon floated off the beach at Westpbrt on yesterday morning's tide. At a meeting of the Westlarid Racing Club held last evening it was resolved to issue a programme for the Christmas Meeting of two | days, with about £400 added money. At the meeting of the Auckland Board of Education the case of Mr Brown, tho second assistant master of the Wellesley-street School, against whom charges of alleged inebriety and other allegations of misconduct had been made, the School Committee, after investigation, simply recommended Mr Brown's removal from tbe school. The Board resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, " That tha Board having read the charges in this case, and also the reports of the Committee, are satisfied that Mr Brown has been guilty of gross misbehaviour, and therefore dismiss him from the employment iof the Board. Wn Oppenheimeb despatches the' first party of gumdiggers (20) by the Manapouri for Sydney for New Caledonia to work his concession on gunifielde there granted by the French Government. The Native Land Court sat yesterday at EJuapoi, Canterbury, and' disposed of a number of applications, for the most part granting them. There was a large concourse of natives, but the proceedings were most orderly. Btjndooea. was scratched yesterday afternoon for the Canterbury and New Zealand Cups. In reference to the late Btranding of the ketch Reliance, Capt. Haultain, writing to a friend in Auckland under date of September 11, says:—We left Thames for Whangarei on Monday forenoon. On Tuesday morning, just outside of Whangarei Heads, when jibing, I was knocked overboard. I swam round for about half an hour, cooeeing in hope that»they (the crew) would pick me up, but seeing no signs of the boat, I stripped all, my clothes off and started for the beach, about three miles off. I saw a light on the b?ach, which I swam for, and as soon as it was daylight I saw that it was tbe Reliance. I managed to get on the beach, very nearly dead. I had to be carried on board. I was 3& hours swimming with a heavy sea on. The men on the ketch state that when I was knooked overbo rd they rounded the vessel to put the boat out, and pulled round for two hours looking for me, without success. They got among the breakers, when the boat filled, but they managed to get her on the beach j the koteh also went ashore on the beach. Ths grand chess tournament in Auckland in aid of St. Andrew's Church building fund closed last night, after a three night's run, with crowded houses. The total, receipts were £350.
