Paeroa, Yesterday. KARANGAHAKE. Hatteaki G.M.Co.—This Company's battpry, together with all other arrangements in connection therewith, was finally and satisfactorily completed on Tuesday last, and permanent crashing operations were started at noon yesterday. The battery, comprising 16 head of stampers, is driven by one of Shield's turbines, and the average speed attained yesterday was 50 strokes per minute. This rate of speed can easily be increased to 60 or 65 strokes by shortening the driving beliand remedy- . ing one or two other defects, all of which Will be accomplished in the course of a lew days. Meantime the.battery will be . kept-,going one shift upon the company's staff, of which there is about 300 loads to grass. The tramway connecting this company's mine and battery is about three quarters of a mile in length, and is divided iuto three, sections, of which one is a selfacting wire section 1200 feet in length, stretching right across the Waitauheta Biver. . This system of tramway was to the battery proprietors '^T9y^ certain would-be mining engineers -„._._ who managed, however, to saddle an unfortunate contractor with the responsibility of carrying out their pet scheme, and when he failed to do so, the b ttery proprietors were obliged to send for Mr E. Corbett who, notwithstanding innumerable predictions to the contrary, Managed to make the whole thing a com plete success.
