A CANINE PILOT.
The Warrnambool (Victoria, not America) Standard tells of a wonderful large brown retriever dog named Maori, on board the Frank Guy schooner now in Warrnambool harbor. He steers admirably, grasping the spokes in orthodox sailor style ; and alternately putting the helm to potter starboard. . Occasionally he glances at. the binnacle/and looks aloft to see that the ship riV full and by. Oncei, on .entering Port Chalmers, N.Z., the Frank Guy had to pass between twoships at anchor, one of them a large immigrant ship. Captain Ballo, knowing the schooner would steer herself for a few minuses in the light breeae, sent the men, below' and ensconced himself in his cabin, keeping an eye on Maori, who was at the wheel, erect and attentive. The effect of the solitary dog steering a 20b-ton schooner between the two vessels had an almost electrical effect on the crews and passengers, who crowded the bulwark* to wonder at the novel sight. .
