The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1883.

The only business done in the Police Court this morning was dealing with a "drunk," who was fined 5s and costs or imprisonment till the rising of the Court, and the granting of a prohibition order against the offender, Farley. '

The local Waltomtfs were delighted this morning when the ova arrived. Messr 8 Allom and Smith have bsen arduously attentive in preparing the hatching boxes, and securing a 7 home for the acclimants. Very complete arrangements have been made, and if the importation should not prove successful, it will not lie at the doors of the introducers' The ova was received in capital condition' and was transferred to the boxes without accident. The disciples of Old Izaak will probably have some sport in our streams ere long.

Thb rough weather we have experienced for the past day or two may have the effect of washing the body of the unfortunate young man Harris ashore, and the Harbormaster; in the event of its not being discovered in the meantime, will send out a boat's crew as soon as the weather moderates, to search the banks of the river. ;

The annual dinner of the Shortland Fire Brigade took place last night and was a great success. Superintendent West occupied the chair, and the Vice chair was filled by Captn. Schofield. Apologies were received from a number of townspeople for their non-attend-ance. After the usual loyal toasts' w*re disposed of, '* The local governing bodies," " The Guests," " The Sister Brigade," " Insurance Agents," " The Shortland Brigade," proposed by a visitor, " The Ladies," and " The Press, 1' were proposed and duly honored. The evening was enlivened by songs frona several brigade members and visitors and a very pleasant reunion was wound up with tho National Anthera.

AIiAHBSUP occurred this morning üboufc six o'clock at fche back of the Big Pump. The hill slipped away behind the shed used for the steam capstan, and tho roof has been demolished, the barricade recently erected also being smashed, and tbe building half filled - with mullock and slush. The steam-pipe is broken, and also one of the cog* wheels. This is the second time the engine has been buried by a slip, so the directors will no doubt do now what should hare been done long ago—remove the capstan to the opposite side of the pump. .

. A CASE of scarlet ferer in Irishtown, was reported at the County Council to-day by Dr Suitable who is attending the patient.

The usual meeting of the Choral Society will not be held this evening, but members will recommence their practices next Thursday, the 13th, at the usual time and place.

We have to acknowledge the receipt from Messrs Frater Bros, of their Share Investors' Guide for the current month.

Thb chief items in the Harbourmaster's report, which we were compelled to hold over from yesterday we're as follows:—The dredge had been laid up since the 14th ult., aa the mode of working was too expensive.^ It was recommended that the Board place a reliable seaman in charge of the plant, if they decided to continue operations, as his time was fully occupied, and he could not supervise it. The excavation already made waß gradully filling again,!; and was likely to continue so even supposing the channel was cut in from low water mark. To maintain it would more than constantly employ the present dredging plant. He recommended that after the Government section, is completed the Board extend the Shortland wharf another chain. . By this means the scour would be assisted and afford more room, which is urgently required, and I Government would be willing to construct [ the end to the Board's portion instead of the chain now in course of construction. The cost, apart from filling, would be about £120. The snags, roots, &c, escaping from the Shortland booms were causing constant expense and annoyance, and it was suggested that action be taken. ta prevent it. The report concluded thus :—" I am extremely distressed at having to report the melancholy death by drowning of Henry Harris, late engineer of the dredge. You will have seen the particulars in the papers, and I have nothing more to add to that account: and I must request your Board to release me from similar risks in future./ I am (as you are no doubt aware) obliged to pick up the first men I can get for a boat's crew, consequently can never depend upon having skilled men; and I offer the following suggestions for your consideration—either to place two seamen at my disposal for a crew (there is plenty of work iii the department to fully employ such men, or to add a clause to the by-laws to the effect that all vessels requiring the services of a pilot shall bring up off Grahamstown, and send ashore to notify the fact, and take the pilot off. Such clause, if passed, to be notified to all Custom-houses, in the colony."—The Board resolved that dredging operations at the Goods Wharf be discontinued for the present; the discussion of tho proposal for the further extension of Shortltmd Wharf was postponed, pending the settlement of the compensation difficulty; to forward an account for 30s, the cost of removing logs from the channel, to the Shortland Sawmill Co., also threatening that unless it is paid and other snags removed legal proceedings, would ensue.—Concerning the pilotage proposal, Mr Osborne said he had always understood that Mr Schofield's asaistance was at the disposal of the Harbor-master in putting off to vessels, and he could not understand why he had not accompanied him on Saturday.—The Harbormaster said Scbofiald had enough to do on the wharf in his (Mr Bayldon's) absence, in berthing vessels, and general superintendence. In course of further conversation, Captain BayJdoa said he had not until now been aware that Schofield was at his disposal for this purpose. He had hitherto supposed that Schofield belonged to a different department, and was not under his control. Young- New Zealand's precocity is proverbial. At a party a few evenings ago, a young lady of fourteen or fifteen summers bad danced four times with a budding beau of about the same age, and the former was heard to say to a feminine companion afterwards : " Oh so and so has danced four times with me; I wonder does he mean anything."
